ALLEY BOY - War Cry

Nowadays, Alley Boy has a proper contract with Atlantic Records, but he still cares about his mixtapes. According to what he said about his very latest, War Cry, he considers them like normal albums. He approaches them with the same level of care and professionalism as regular records, selecting the best materials from his prolific production. To be honest, it is a bit hard to believe, judging by the 22 tracks of his gargantuan latest release, a perfect complement to both editions of Definition of Fuck Shit, and to Purgatory, Nigganati, and The Gift of Discernment, the free projects which, over the last three years, helped building his reputation.

NORMAN - Polarity

The very large Oldominion collective – around 20 affiliates, no less, spread between Seattle and Portland – lies at the very core of the North-West underground rap scene. No doubt there. Just because they are too many […]

EDAN - Primitive Plus LP

Released by the Lewis Recordings, a UK label, in 2002 – the Brits may have been the only ones willing to take risks with such a record – Primitive Plus is the enriched version of Primitive, an EP which generated an underground buzz by 1999. Edan, its author, belonged then to an emerging kind of indie rappers: the hip-hop handymen. Indeed, this graduate of Boston's Berklee College of Music took everything in charge: he provided the raps, the beats, the scratches, the cover art… And as usual in such circumstances, the output looked like a demo recorded in a scullery.

JOE BEATS - Interview

Joe DelCarpini, a.k.a. Joe Beats, is a beatmaker from Rhode Island. He used to be the other half of Sage Francis' Non-Prophets, and pursued a solo career in parallel. Later on, he became part of another duo, with Blak […]

BIGG JUS - Interview

Talking about the late 90's rap underground is not an option, if no member of the scene's most iconic trio is involved. Bigg Jus, indeed, was a central part of the indie rap movement, first as a rapper in Company Flow, […]

MIKE LADD - Easy Listening 4 Armageddon

When one seeks to determine which album from Mike Ladd is the best, Welcome to the Afterfuture is often mentioned, or the Infesticons' Gun Hill Road. Both records seem bolder than the very first from this university teacher turned rapper and producer, an active member of the Nuyorican Poets Café scene. They look more diverse, and even catchier. Compared to them, Easy Listening 4 Armageddon sounds too soft, sounding like ambient music, or quiet jazz, or even easy listening. This record, however, may have passed better the test of time.

SERENGETI - Family and Friends

It's been a while since Serengeti joined the indie rap scene. Since Dirty Flamingo, in 2003, he's been particularly prolific, releasing up to 4 albums in one single year, in 2006, including the conceptual Dennehy. For a long time, though, the Chicago rapper, whose real name is David Cohn, has played a cameo role. But he persevered, and finally made his way, moving to Anticon with his second record with Polyphonic, Terradactyl (2009), creating the S / S / S trio with Son Lux and Sufjan Stevans, and releasing, in 2011, his most accessible album.

SANKOFA - Interview

Now located in Fort Wayne, Indiana, but of Australian origin, Stephen Eric Bryden, a.k.a. Sankofa, started his career by the second half of the 1990's, as a member of the Society of NIMH, along with Spon, JON?DOE and […]

ELIGH & AMP LIVE - Therapy at 3

Though all Living Legends records have not always been flawless, the solo career of Eligh was, for a long time, nothing less than exemplary. Starting in the second half of the 1990's with good albums like As They Pass and Gas Dream, it reached its apex in the 2000's with some gems, first Poltergeist, and then the much original Enigma. After this peak, however, the rapper and beatmaker didn't provide anything substantial for us to enjoy. The reason, as we would learn in 2010 with the Grey Crow album, was due to a serious drug addiction.

MAC LETHAL - Irish Goodbye

A long time ago, Mac Lethal, a white rapper from Kansas City, received some praise. It was by the beginning of the 2000's, when he won or was second to several editions of the Scribble Jam contest, and was sponsored by […]

BIZZART - Bloodshot Mama

With such an alias, this one laid clearly his cards on the table. Arthur Arellanes III's music, indeed, was both bizarre and arty. Once a spoken word artist belonging to the California's underground hip-hop scene – the guy played sets with Blackalicious - Bizzart explored further the nerdy, crossover, intimate and experimental kind of rap launched by Anticon around the year 2000. He did even better, proposing one of the most accomplished products of the genre.

GODFATHER DON & KOOL KEITH - The Cenobites LP

The transition of Kool Keith from the funky Ultramagnetic MCs to the more futuristic and hallucinated Dr. Octagon was partly due to the rapper and producer Godfather Don. Momentarily recruited by the former, in 1992, he […]

DOPESTYLE 1231 - KutMasta Kurt Presents Dopestyle 1231

Released in 2004 by two KutMasta Kurt protégés – his name was in the title, but he took not part to the record – this album had not been well received by the critics. They reproached almost everything to Dopestyle 1231. They said that it was not funky or melodic enough, that the duo was some Johnny-come-lately, delivering ten years too late its science-fiction inspired underground rap. What some despised in this record, though, was precisely what made it delectable.

ASTRONAUTALIS - This Is Our Science

Though Astronautalis is a key player on the indie hip-hop scene - at least regarding the folk rap subgenre – none of his albums is flawless. The very first, You and Yer Good Ideas, was full of promises, with some great […]

JESSE DANGEROUSLY - Humble & Brilliant

Jesse Dangerously always deserved more than the nerdcore label he's been associated with. Several releases proved this, already, where the Canadian demonstrated how funny, astute and good a rapper he was. And in 2011, […]

KILL THE VULTURES - The Careless Flame

Finally, Oddjobs' end had been a good thing. These rappers from the Midwest have never been as interesting as when they split into two new acts, the fire-raising duo Power Struggle, and Kill the Vultures. The Careless Flame, one of the latter's LPs, confirmed it. After they merged jazz and rap in a punk and corrosive way, with their first record, they perfected the formula with the second one.
