THEMSELVES - Them

"I'm afraid we'll have to innovate..." Such had asserted Dose One in 1999, on "It's Them", one of the most notable tracks of Music for the Advancement of Hip Hop, Anticon's manifesto compilation. And he hadn't said that in vain. As demonstrated with the heavy metal leaning cover art of this first album, it was obvious that Them - later known as Themselves - would not make do with ordinary rap.

ARCHETYPE - Red Wedding

In its very heart, hip-hop has always nurtured its own contrary. In this time of triumph for the most brutal and ignorant forms of raps, a more educated, artsy and intellectual version of this music is still living. While some are only playing with punchlines, some prefer more meaningful lyrics. Though many rappers are focusing on their swag, some others are more discreet, less sexy, and opting for the look of the ordinary men. Contrary to the most party-oriented and electronic forms of rap, some seem to cherish a rock feeling; they prefer sophisticated beats, rich samples and "real" instruments, to the more common bombastic synthesizers.

KNO - Death Is Silent

The CunninLynguists have been some of these few guys, more or less affiliated to the indie rap movement of the early 2000's, who managed to make it and find a place in the bigger rap community. Those rappers from Kentucky, however, were not too different from their peers; they had followed more or less the same path – an ascending or descending one, depending on the view. Originally a revivalist group, fond of 90's sounding loops and samples, and with an old school rap mindset, they became more contemplative. Over time, their lyrics turned more introspective, their music more cinematic, flirting with folk and rock guitar sounds.

SAGE FRANCIS - Copper Gone

We had almost lost sight of Sage Francis. And for a good reason: for four years, he hadn't released any record. He seemed to have stopped rapping, managing his Strange Famous label, or travelling to Africa. Moreover, his […]

EDAN - Beauty and the Beat

If we need to select a symbol for retro-futurism – this trend consisting in coming back to the past, in order to reinvent the future – this needs to be Edan Portnoy. With his first album, the underground classic Primitive Plus, the rapper, producer and DJ created an improbable musical subgenre: old school hip-hop for the year 3000. He had gone back to rap as it existed in the 80's, and brought it into the new millennium, as if the 90's had never happened. And with his second album, he had returned even further, in the 60's, transferring psychedelic rock to the rap era.

ALLEY BOY - Purgatory

The best time in Alley Boy's career was 2011. Taking place between his first steps as a rapper in Gucci Mane's shadow – he had featured on Chicken Talk 2 in 2008 – and The Gift of Discernment in 2012 – his most exposed […]

KING LOUIE - Tony

Chief Keef still releases strong projects, but since he was fired from Interscope, the individual representing the best the dirtiest side of Chicago's street rap, in 2014, is King Louie, the very pioneer of the drill movement. He did it in the early summer with Tony, a release many acknowledge as his very best to date. And actually, it is one of his most consistent; one of his most monochromatic as well, since, as alluded with the cover art, it uses one single color only: the black one.

MOS DEF & TALIB KWELI - Are Black Star

Any major event, mechanically, engenders its opposite. By the end of the 90's, for example, when the bling bling posture triumphed in hip-hop music, others had decided to go the other way. They opted for political, […]

TRICIA ROSE - The Hip Hop Wars

Assessing a musical genre on moral criteria is simplistic. It is narrow-minded. Most often, it means setting useless boundaries, spoiling one's pleasure and, at the end of the day, missing the point. It is legitimate, […]

EPIC - Local Only

Epic had a smooth voice, a debonair flow, misleadingly naïve words and his lyrics were full with some kind of sweet irony. Also, he had quite unusual a look for a rapper, with his grey hair and shy manners. The Canadian, […]

LATYRX - The Album

The name Latyrx (say it la-tir-iks), mixed those of two rappers, Lateef and Lyrics Born, both core members of the Solesides label, along with Blackalicious and DJ Shadow, all later known as the Quannum collective. By the 90's, each of these people, jointly or separately, had delivered masterpieces of the Bay Area indie hip-hop world, like the Melodica EP, or the much more famous Endtroducing…. And for Latyrx, the key release had been an album soberly titled… The Album.

MAKER - Honestly

Coming from Aurora, not too far from Chicago, Marco Jacobo explored a similar style as Galapagos4's beatmakers. His first album, actually, was similar to Meaty Ogre's Leo Vs. Pisces. In both cases, it was some well crafted work based on samples, alternating rapped songs with instrumental tracks. Both men knew each other well, actually, since they had recorded jointly another record, Meet your Maker Vol. 1. And Birthwrite Records, Pugslee Atomz's label, where the producer would release Honestly, was somehow a twin to Galapagos4. However, thanks to his outstanding finesse, Maker was surpassing all other beatmakers on this scene.

RICH GANG - The Tour, Part 1

A rap business veteran from New-Orleans, rejuvenated through his collaboration with two rising stars of the new decade, on a joint mixtape: this story actually, looks familiar. In 2013, it happened already with the Louie […]

MICRANOTS - Obelisk Movements

The Micranots were based in Atlanta, but their music had no connection with the usual kinds of raps in the Dirty South. Nothing surprising with this : by 2000, the duo had recently relocated. It had been funded, […]

EXISTEREO - Dirty Deeds & Dead Flowers

According to his press kit, Existereo was influenced by the likes of Hank Williams III, Black Sabbath and Gram Parsons, in addition to some rappers. This sounded just ridiculous, these people covering genres as diverse as country, metal or hip-hop. And though, it was credible, to whoever was familiar with this rapper - and graffiti artist. His records, indeed, were all incredibly eclectic, even for a member of the Shape Shifters, starting with his first album, Dirty Deeds & Dead Flowers.

BANKROLL FRESH - Life Of A Hot Boy

Trentavious White, a.k.a. Bankroll Fresh, isn't necessarily the most notorious rapper in Atlanta. He's been active for a long while, though. His first remarkable featuring comes back to EA Sports Center, the Gucci Mane […]
