COMPANY FLOW - Funcrusher Plus

By 1997, just when some feared that hip-hop was getting corrupted by success, "independent" and "alternative" had become buzz words. And no other claimed them louder than Company Flow. A product of […]

BINARY STAR - Masters Of The Universe

Masters Of The Universe is an extended version of Waterworld, an LP released in small numbers in 1999, and it makes some noise in by the year 2000. Binary Star's kind of rap, though, is not exactly the boldest or the […]

SCARUB - Heavenbound

Quite recently, while reviewing the sales list for 2010 on the Access website, one could notice that the Living Legends were still monopolizing the top positions, with their most recent solo or collective projects. Truth be told, they are a bit at home with this online shop specialized in the backpacker rap genre. But still, this relative popularity is somehow surprising, considering that they release much too many records, and that their creativity is not exactly at its top. How is it that the aging Living Legends, up to this day, still look like the quintessential indie rap band?

LEXICON - Interview

Four years after their excellent Rapstars EP, Lexicon’s brothers Nick and Gid Black, supported by the guitar and bass players Erich Schneider and Alex Pauley, finally released an album which fulfilled all of their promises. This made a great opportunity to meet them and know a bit more about the reason for the evolution of the group toward such a rock / rap recipe, and to share some insights about what happened to hip-hop over the last few years.

KOMADOSE - Beta One

By the early 00's, the indie rap scene was so crowded that only a few critics had identified this album. Like so many others, Komadose got lost among the multiple Company Flow clones flooding the underground of these […]

CESCHI - The One Man Band Broke Up

Over the last few years, Ceschi has never stopped being a hyperactive man. He contributed to several records from others. He finally released Toca's album. He mocked the crunk subgenre, with his Knuck Feast parody. Also, […]

HIEROGLYPHICS - Third Eye Vision

Considering the Hieroglyphics background, and the critical success they encountered with records like I Wish my Brother George... (1991) or Fear Itself (1994), and of course 93 ‘til Infinity (1993), big magazines like […]

SONIC SUM - The Sanity Annex

It is, in some way, a forgotten classic. This album didn't really make its way, beyond a small clique of rap connoisseurs. Music critics, including the generalists, have been quite positive when The Sanity Annex was […]

SHAPE OF BROAD MINDS - Craft Of The Lost Art

Shape of Broad Minds, Craft of the Lost Art… No less! The name, the album title, the sophisticated cover art, the simple fact that it is released by Lex Records, and finally, just listening to it: everything confirms […]

OMID - Beneath The Surface

The reason why Beneath The Surface is so crucial a record is, primarily, historical. Discovered by many on the same websites that, by the end of the century, offered illegally music from the likes of MF Doom or […]

JUGGAKNOTS - Re:Release (Clear Blue Skies)

The Juggaknots are hip-hop's best kept secret. Some discovered them by 1999, through the Weathermen, or Breezly Brewin's contribution to Prince Paul's A Prince Amongst Thieves album. Some others, thanks to the fiery […]

SEBUTONES - 50/50 Where It Counts

50/50 Where It Counts is a crucial record. It counts, indeed, for the Halifax scene, for Canadian rap in general, and for the late 90's indie hip-hop movement. By this time, in 1998, both members of the Sebutones are […]

DALEK - Interview

Dälek is not a newcomer. The group has sent us its impressive rap discharges for nearly 10 years. But as 2007 seems to be a busy year with the releases of the excellent Abandoned Language and the Deadverse Massive Vol 1 compilation, it was time for us to disclose this interview we recorded with the MC in March.

GRUF - Druidry

Among the great records released by Peanuts & Corn between Mcenroe's Ethics EP and his definitive Disenfranchised, the first album from Gruf deserves some special attention. In 2001, after he collaborated with […]

RADIOINACTIVE - Interview

Radioinactive isn’t your average rapper. It’s been a while since we became interested in the unstoppable rap of this unusual MC who reinvented his music formula record after record. From the first recordings of Log Cabin […]

BUSDRIVER - Interview

It was difficult to catch Busdriver this day. But finally we did it. I interviewed him with the help of a German journalist after his concert on the last day of the Nördik Impakt festival in Caen, Normandy. Busdriver was a bit tired after a whole week of shows in France, but he was kind enough to answer each of our questions.
