TTC - Ceci n'est pas un Disque

As years and singles followed one another, TekiLatex, Tido Berman and Cuizinier have kept reminding us what being surprised feels like. Their first album, which they entitled the Magritte way, is no exception to their rule. Ceci n’est pas un Disque (This is not a record) is not just about putting together what has already been done, it stands out by the new evolution in the sound and the way the trio works.

ABSTRACKT KEAL AGRAM - Abstrackt Keal Agram

It seems that you had to search among instrumental works if you wanted to find the best French albums for 2001 in the hip-hop affiliated category. After Tacteel’s Butter for the Fat (admittedly an EP), it’s Abstrackt Keal Agram’s turn to find their place a bit late in our end of the year best-of.

FOG - The Fog

Dose One’s experience of the British scene has been quite fruitful up to now. It enabled him to follow new tracks, to make interesting collaborations, and, probably more discreetly, it enabled Fog (aka Andrew Broder) to be heard. The latter could have remained locked away forever in his native state of Minnesota, with his connection to an obscure post-rock band (Lateduster) as his only feat. But after being introduced to the adequate British circle of artists by his Anticon rapper and friend, Fog is now signed to Ninja Tune, the only record company which gave him the opportunity to release on a large scale his first eponymous record, a particularly wild, crazy and inspired debut.

TACTEEL - Butter for the Fat

Proofs of DJ Tacteel’s potential are accumulating steadily. After being a member of Paris-based hip hop crew ATK, Tacteel took part to the long awaited Projet Chaos (Chaos Project), for which he conceived "Selective Approach", one of the very best (and probably the most lasting) tracks of this VA. For the end of 2001, he chose to release his debut EP, Butter for the Fat, including this instrumental track and seven others, heralding a number of other projects to come.

SAIAN SUPA CREW - X-Raisons

Two years ago, the Saïan were so built up the disappointment we felt was equally high. Now that we know they are just a crew of cheerful characters making nice rap to have fun, and now we find them pretty cool. We cannot […]

TYPICAL CATS - Interview

Signed on Galapagos4, Chicago's most promising label, The Typical Cats showed with their first album that they were indeed very good at emceeing and battling. We interviewed all of them before we get a chance to listen to their new collective and solo materials.

LOST CHILDREN OF BABYLON - Interview

We discovered The Lost Children of Babylon about four years ago through their involvement in the Jedi Mind Tricks' Psycho Social... album. But the first full-length, they released a few months ago, revealed something […]

TES - Interview

August 2001 : Hip-Hop Section gets the opportunity to interview Tes, one of NY's underground best artists nowadays. Unfortunately, every one among us who is a fan of Tes is on summer holidays at this time. I'm finally […]

TES - Take Home Tes

Nature doesn’t like empty spaces. The Year 2000 is finishing, Company Flow have barely announced their retirement as a group, and you already feel the urge to find somebody worthy of relaying the mythical New-Yorkers who brought about the new era of hip-hop. Hip-hop’s very own (hyper)specialists did not need much time to find the prodigal sibling. Supported by a terrifying (and terrific) contorted piano, a style broken down into movements, and a cranky voice, the track "Acts of Tragedy" (previously released on an eponymous single) allowed Tes to quickly establish himself as the new icon of underground (and complicated) hip-hop.

LA CAUTION - Asphalte Hurlante

The beginning of the year 2001 has been quite unsurprising. The same day, hip-hop’s two most anticipated albums came to our ears, and came up to all expectations, setting to reach the top ranks in our end-of-the-year playlists. In the US, The Cold Vein gathered what Vast, Vordul and El-P could do best. Here in France, within only ten tracks, Asphalte Hurlante (Screaming Asphalt) by La Caution annihilates and destroys all at once the much too self centered French rap scene.

MARS ILL - Interview

The much talented Mars Ill (ManCHILD, and Dust) are the authors of Raw Material, one of last year’s must-have hip-hop albums. That was just one good reason to ask for a short interview with them. But we little atheist French people couldn’t help asking some nasty questions about the christian content of some of their lyrics, fearing that they would not be welcome. However, ManCHILD, the emcee, accepted to answer them and we must admit he did it quite well.

BIGG JUS - Interview

An interview of Company Flow with us was planned two years ago, when they came and visited us for a show in Southern France. But finally, Montpellier was too far from Paris and we missed them. At this time, Bigg Jus had already left hip hop’s new wave leaders and started working on other projects. Today we see this interview of him as a kind of revenge, even if we deliberately decided not to question him too much about his former crew. The time has come now for Subverse and the rapper’s solo album, and this new story seems as promising as the previous one was.

ODDJOBS - Interview

The Midwest is not the first place people look at when they want to discover fresh hip hop. But things started to change a few years ago with Atmosphere key Overcast! release. Coming from Minnesota as well, Oddjobs is a band of two MC’s (Advizer, Crescent Moon) and two DJ’s (Anatomy, Deeltax) from the Cases of Mistaken Identity crew that recently released a very convincing Absorbing Playtime EP. We whished to know more about them and all of them aggred to answer separately to this interview.

BRAILLE - Lifefirst: Half The Battle

The existence of a Christian oriented hip-hop branch being now granted, it was only a matter of time before someone really talented emerge from it. Such a guy, actually, does exist. He comes from Portland, Oregon, his […]

KUNGA 219 - Interview

Apparently Halifax, Nova Scotia, is quite a rich scene with plenty of hip hop artists of a new kind. Revealed after Buck 65 and Sixtoo - both of them affiliated to Anticon - here is Kunga 219, author of the brilliant […]

MICROFT HOLMES - Interview

Just listen to the A Jeep Jack Affair compilation and you'll realise that Microft Holmes is one of the best emcees nowadays. Hip Hop Section has tried to catch him before he becomes the next hype. We prepared a few questions and asked the Genevan Heathen (their French speaking contact), to do an interview with him. He did it brilliantly, and interviewed The Beyonder (producer, among others, of 7L & Esoteric's classic "Be Alert") and Plusone (an unknown) in quite a crazy atmosphere. Too much alcohol.
